I took a sewing elective back in middle school, and enjoyed it so much, but wow, after getting a great deal on a used sewing machine, I’ve realized just how much I’ve forgotten. So I’m thrilled to have gotten this book about basic sewing techniques. It is a great introduction and review over everything I need to now.

The book is divided up into Sewing Essentials, Basic Techniques and Style Techniques. I’m relieved to have such a ready reference, with clear writing, excellent illustrations and photos, along with all the info I wish I’d remembered better. Great for beginners, too; it should be bundled with every sewing machine!

My mother and I took a cake decorating class at our local community college when I was a teen. I remember a fair amount, but not as much as I’d like. Plus, decorating styles have changed, and I’d like to be able to take my decorating to a higher, Instagram-ready level. Also, my daughter is becoming quite an accomplished baker, and she wants to learn the basics better and move forward also.

We’ve both read articles online, and watched YouTube videos, but they can often leave out important basic details. This book shows clearly how to create many different looks and master techniques. There’s lots of new ideas I’ve never tried yet, including incorporating ribbons and making cut out decorations. I’m glad to get a proper introduction and explanation of how to accomplish simple-to-advanced techniques, and in such a convenient and beautiful book.
