The Dino Files #1: A Mysterious Egg is a fun book for children and tweens who wonder what it would be like to find a real dinosaur. When two cute and clever kids find a dinosaur egg at their grandparents’ dinosaur museum (and amateur dig) they’re thrilled — until the egg hatches.
They decide to keep the just-hatched herbivore dinosaur a secret. Mishaps and mayhem ensue. The characters — a young boy/dinosaur “expert” and his young cousin, who pretends she is a TV reporter — are engaging and fanciful enough for fun reading. The book moves along breezily, without getting bogged down in dinosaur jargon or extraneous detail. Clearly the first in a series, it should make a fun gift for a young reader just starting chapter books, and seems to me like a must-buy for schools and libraries.
